If I had a dollar for every time I wished someone in a horror movie could text 911 for help, I could …well, I could pay back my student loans. Verizon must have watched the same movies, because they plan to offer their customers a 911 texting service starting sometime in 2013. Not only will this help people stuck in real-life horror movie situations, but also will help hearing-impaired and deaf people to get their emergency message through. Let’s just hope people don’t (ab)use this service to prank dispatchers as often as they do with verbal calls. Believe it or not, EMTs and Paramedics don’t necessarily enjoy waking up at 3:30 a.m., only to find you and your drunk friends cracking up on a sofa.
